Chances are, if you bought a PC in the early 2000s, it came pre-loaded with McAfee antivirus software. McAfee has always been a big name in the antivirus world. Like most antivirus programs, the pricing structure for Bitdefender is based on how many years of coverage you want for five or 10 devices. It has its own VPN and improved parental controls if you have a kid who uses your PC. We rarely ever see antivirus programs go the extra mile as much as Bitdefender does. One of our favorite things about Bitdefender is it can scan for any active vulnerabilities: whether that's out of date software, missing Windows Updates, or even woeful passwords, and it presents this in easy-to-read reports. Don't worry, though you still have plenty of control if you want it as well. Autopilot makes all the security-related decisions for you based on your usage patterns, so you aren't bombarded with alerts and notifications. What makes Bitdefender so good is that, once it's installed, it immediately goes into Autopilot mode. While there are plenty of capable antivirus apps on the market, the best antivirus for gaming should do its job without hindering your performance or being too intrusive in your day-to-day use. One hit from clicking the wrong link can be irreversibly devastating if handled incorrectly. It pays to get good protection, what with our PCs containing so much personal data. Dodgy pop-up ads, process injections, phishing emails, and malware are waiting to pounce under the guise of trustworthy-looking sites. The antiviruses of today are much less of a strain on your system than they once were, at least the best antiviruses we've tested and listed here are.Ĭyberattacks are constantly evolving, and the best antivirus will be able to keep up with the onslaught. That way, only if something disastrous is happening will they make themselves known-like a loyal, well-trained guard dog. That said, most of today's top antivirus suites will keep out of the way with the help of 'gaming mode' or something to that effect. I know that sounds harsh, but there's really not much any antivirus can do if you actively install malware onto your machine thinking it's Half-Life 3. Ultimately, it falls on your own common sense to not be clicking on dodgy links or downloading strange packages. Alright, there are some other antiviruses that do the job too, but we really do recommend you enable Windows Defender and occasionally scan with an anti-malware software, like Malwarebytes.

Sadly, Sublime was unable to legally include the cover on the official version of the album 40oz. The most famous version of the song is arguably its cover performed in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers”. The song also originally contained a cover of Rawhide, a Western song written by Ned Washington lyrics and composed by Dimitri Tiomkin in 1958.

Their hind legs are larger and more muscular than their front legs, which gives them great jumping power. Mountain lions are powerfully built, with large paws and sharp claws. Mountain lions can also growl, hiss, mew, yowl, squeak, spit, and purr to get their message across with other cats, and they are known for a short, high-pitched scream and a whistle-like call. The cats may actually see each other once in a while, but mostly they leave "messages," with feces, urine, scratched logs, or marks they scrape out in the dirt or snow. Mountain lions find shelter to rest or get away from bad weather in thick brush, rocky crevices, or caves, which might be anywhere in their home range. The home range of males tends to be largest and overlap the smaller ranges of several females. These ranges overlap, so the cats share some parts. The cats live in home ranges that vary in size from 30 to 125 square miles (7,770 to 32,375 hectares). But that doesn’t mean they don’t have any contact with one another. They live in a variety of habitats, at home in forests, prairies, deserts, and swamps-they are very adaptable cats! Mountain lions are solitary, except during breeding or when a mother is caring for her cubs. With the exception of humans, the mountain lion has the largest range of any terrestrial mammal in the Western hemisphere, from northern British Columbia to Argentina. Its slender body and calm demeanor are more like that of a cheetah both cats would rather flee than fight, and both rarely confront humans. Scientists classify the mountain lion as a small cat, as it does not roar, but purrs like smaller cats do. Adult males weigh 40 to 60 percent more than adult females. Those living in warm, humid areas tend to be a darker, reddish brown color, and mountain lions found in colder climates have thicker, longer hair that is almost silver-gray in color. Mountain lions are generally a solid tawny color, with slightly darker hair on the back and a whitish underside. It is endangered, with only about 50 cats left, and conservation efforts are underway to try to save it. This is a subspecies of mountain lion that used to be found from Texas throughout the southeast but is now found only in southern Florida’s swamps. You may have heard of the Florida panther. All of these names are considered correct, but in Southern California they are commonly called mountain lions. And “panther” is a general term for cats that have solid-colored coats, so it was used for black pumas as well as black jaguars and black leopards. “Cougar” seems to have come from an old South American Indian word, cuguacuarana, which was shortened to "cuguar" and then spelled differently. What's in a name? Mountain lion, puma, cougar, panther-this cat is known by more names than just about any other mammal! But no matter what you call it, it’s still the same cat, Puma concolor, the largest of the "small cats." So how did it get so many names? Mostly because it has such a large range, and people from different countries have called it different things.Įarly Spanish explorers of North and South America called it leon (lion) and gato monte (cat of the mountain), from which we get the name "mountain lion." “Puma” is the name the Incas gave this cat in their language. If you live in an area with extreme hot or cold temperatures, your HVAC system will likely get more use and coupled with a smart thermostat, you could save more on your energy bills. Controlling your temperature settings with a smart thermostat will help you save money while staying comfortable in your home, year-round. The average American household spends more than $900 each year on heating and cooling costs. Additionally, ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats are required to be able to enter a low-power standby mode when inactive, which saves even more energy. Only smart thermostats that earn the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings. To meet ENERGY STAR’s requirements for smart thermostat energy savings, manufacturers must show how their model reduces the HVAC system’s use in different climates across the country. However, it controls devices that use a lot of energy through heating and cooling. While all smart thermostats allow you to set your desired temperature at pre-programmed times from anywhere on your smart device, only ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats offer all of that, plus energy savings, cost savings, and environmental protection.Ī smart thermostat alone does not use a lot of energy. Why Should You Choose an ENERGY STAR Certified Smart Thermostat? Smart thermostats offer greater convenience, energy savings, and control than manual or programmable thermostats. Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice for you! What is a Smart Thermostat?Ī “smart” thermostat is a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat that allows you to control your home’s heating and cooling temperature settings from your “smart” devices (phone, tablet, or computer). If you have a manual or programmable thermostat and are considering an upgrade, there are plenty of reasons you should choose a “smart” thermostat for your home. Moreover, when one considers that Augustus appears to have tried to present a narrative of refusing the office of dictator, calling it “contrary to the traditions of our ancestors” in the Res Gestae (5-6 cf. As the office of dictator had been abolished in the aftermath of Caesar’s death (Cicero, Philippics 1.3-4), this depiction of Caesar as the holder of an abolished office, while Augustus occupied legitimate offices, might be interpreted as a comparison between the destroyer of the Republic and its saviour.Ī coin from 43 BC depicting Julius Caesar as Perpetual Dictator (The Trustees of the British Museum) A coin issued in 43 BC portrays Augustus as consul, pontifex, and augur, while Caesar is the perpetual dictator. Indeed, even in the immediate aftermath of Caesar’s assassination, it has been argued, Augustus (then Octavian) tried to distance himself from the dictator. Given that the Roman historian Cremutius Codrus was supposedly able to call Brutus and Cassius the ‘last of the Romans’ in the presence of Augustus without any repercussions (Suetonius, Tiberius 61.3 Cassius Dio 57.24.3), it appears that Augustus was content for Caesar’s memory to be disputed. In his second Philippic, he wrote that Caesar “brought a free city, partly by fear, partly by patience, into a habit of slavery” (2.116), which, to Romans, was a fate worse than death ( Philippic 10.19).Įven Augustus’ treatment of Caesar’s memory has been subject to debate for decades. Much of Cicero’s later writings are full of invective language expressing a strong dislike of Caesar. The memory of Caesar was rather divided even during the reign of Augustus. The Death of Julius Caesar (1806) by Vincenzo Camuccini Therefore, on this historic date, I feel we should question how we remember historic figures. However, if there were a man such as Caesar today, a man who overturned the legitimate government through force and installed himself as a dictator, he would be reviled. William Shakespeare brought him to the stage in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, he appears alongside Cyrus and Alexander as rulers who used their funds liberally in Machiavelli’s The Prince (16), and he has featured in dozens, if not hundreds of novels, films, and television shows about ancient Rome. Indeed, he has been remembered throughout history. Thanks to the monumentality of his achievements, and the subsequent longevity of the Roman Empire, Caesar has been immortalized, even admired, in modern historical memory. As Cicero says, Caesar “had performed exploits in war which, though calamitous for the republic, were nevertheless mighty deeds” ( Philippic 2.116). There is no doubt that Caesar’s accomplishments were impressive. The Ides of March, however, was truly the death knell of the Republic, ushering in a destructive period of civil strife and discord, which ended only with the one thing the assassins of Caesar had tried to prevent – a monarchy in all but name. His assumption of the title dictator in perpetuum (‘perpetual dictator’), becoming the de facto monarch of the Roman world, was the beginning of the end of the Roman Republic. Gaius Julius Caesar’s assassination on the Ides of March in 44 BC is truly one of the most momentous events in history. The good is oft interred with their bones įrom William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears Bit boards have the advantage that the whole board can be processed at once with bitwise operations. This is, as we will see later, important for checking if a move is performed within the allowed boundaries. There are also enough bits left over which can be used to encode the boundary of the board. In this way, only 41 bit are required to encode any board position. For peg solitaire, the usage of bit-boards is especially easy, since each hole can either be empty (binary 0) or filled with a peg (binary 1). One major improvement of a classical algorithm can be achieved when instead of arrays, so called bit-boards are used for representing a position. Without the utilization of some advanced approaches, an algorithm could run for many days until a solution is found. Also for backtracking algorithms the computational effort is enormous in order to solve this problem. Since there are many corners on this board it is rather difficult to find a solution where only one peg is left over in the end. In the beginning, only two moves are possible. As I was told – in contrast to the English variant – the only initial empty hole is not located in the center of the board but has to be placed at a slightly different position in order to be able to solve the game (as I found later, the solver was not able to solve the game for an initially empty hole in the center of the board). Efficiently Solving the Diamond-41 BoardĪs the name suggests, the Diamond-41 board consists of 41 holes. This stirred my interest in the game again and I spent several hours writing a solver using bit boards and some other enhancements for this board, as described in the following section. Recently, I again stumbled across peg solitaire when I saw a different board with the shape of a diamond. The solver gave me the following solution: With a slightly adjusted move ordering the solver apparently needs much more time (several hours). I suppose that I was actually quite lucky with the standard move ordering that I was using. It is not nice nor efficient, but surprisingly finds the solution in less than a second. The code is attached at the end of this post. Since I could never solve the game myself I decided to write a solver for the problem. When I started programming a few years ago, English peg solitaire was one of my first projects. The solution for the diamond shaped board is even more tricky. Many players need quite a few attempts in order to find the solution for the English peg solitaire. The English variant is shown in the figure below.Įven though the rules of the game are rather simple, finding a solution is not trivial. The English variant, as shown below, has one additional rule: In order to win, it is not sufficient that only one peg is left in the end this peg also has to be located in the center of the board. This is the case when there is no pair of pegs which are orthogonally adjacent or if only one peg is left. Once no move is possible any longer, the game is over. So, in each move, one peg jumps 2 holes further and the peg in-between is removed. The neighboring peg is then removed, leaving an empty hole. In each move the player selects one peg and jumps – either vertically or horizontally, not diagonally – with this peg over a directly neighboring one into an empty hole. For example, the English variant consists of 33 holes while the typical diamond variant consists of 41 holes. The number of holes depends on the board variant. Peg solitaire is a one-player game played on a board with holes and pegs. Many of us might now the board game peg solitaire and might even have one of its many variants at home. You might need to figure this out for your algorithm to finish in reasonable time.Solving Peg Solitaire with efficient Bit-Board Representations What would be the best way to apply the recursion for this problem? public static boolean setupMove(īoolean pegs, int startX, int startY, int jumpX, int jumpY, int endX, int endY) įor (int i = 0 i are another topic for you to explore. Not allowing the simple solutions to be solved correctly. I have added it at the end of the solveHelp method calling setupMove again but that breaks the rest of my code. I'm not quite sure how to add the recursion to this problem. The issue I am having is with solving more complicated problems such as a plus, a rhombus, and a standard board. My code solves these with no problems along with testing an unsolvable board. (1 move solutions) one move up, one move down, one move left, one move right. My test program tests 4 simple solvable boards. The issue I am currently having is my code is failing to solve different variations of a peg solitaire board. |
